Directory of Gratitude

In Elements of becoming a self on December 21, 2010 at 6:22 pm

Some comments made verbally:

  • every child should make one of these!
  • when can I start?
  • now I see my life how it really is.
  1. I was very impressed by Deborah’s “Directory of Gratitude” and decided to use it in my teaching in the BA in Curative Education/Social Pedagogy which is delivered in partnership between Camphill School Aberdeen and the University of Aberdeen.
The course in question was ‘Life Course 2’ which looks at developments in adult life, addressing key questions such as Crisis and Transition, Spirituality and Identity Formation.
As part of a 3hour session on ‘Identity – how do I know who I really am?’ I showed the video, which facilitated a very lively and deep conversation and then also shared out the individual lifestories of the project to small groups to look at and discuss.
Students gave very good feedback, stating that this opened their eyes to essential life questions, increased their self-knowledge and encouraged them to engage with these questions in their practice.

  2. Topic: Workshop in Aberdeen, February 2010

At the beginning of this year I participated in a workshop on “Social Sculpture”, which was led by Deborah. It has been a most interesting and self reflecting experience. I was taken in especially by hearing about the “directory of gratitude” and thought it a very special path of looking at once life.
I am a active member of the 3rd stage (3rd stage of life not calling it the “Oldies” or “Elderly”) at the Christian Community here in Aberdeen, where a group of people come to gather once a month and exchange any topic relevant to any one of us. I proposed to challenge each other, to look and share with one an other events/person of our lives, which has had an impact in our live and changed some thing for us and would be in our personal “directory of gratitude”. We went round the circle and each one of us (10 at the time) spoke about one event and explained why it had an impact on our life. Although we are only at the beginning of a path, it already shows details with in our life’s, we had not been fully aware of. By sharing it with other people, it gives a special quality of awareness of the shaping of once own life.
Thank you, Deborah, for creating THE DIRECTORY OF GRATITUDE.

  4. Deborah, I was really inspired by your talk at Queens last night – thank you for sharing your story. I think you are a blessed woman because of the amazing people you have met over the years, but also for having the foresight to record their stories…
